The effect of temperature change upon inclusion-containing renal tumor cells of leopard frogs.

چکیده
at Day 7. Previously 1 frog with a renal tumor had been studied 7 days post hibernât ion; thus a total of 8 animals were examined. Light microscopio examination of the tumors showed that the amount of cellular debris increased within the lumina of the tumor tubules during this period. Electron microscopic observa tions showed that the lumina were filled with cellular debris as well as incomplete and complete viruses. Observations on the effect of increased temperature on hibernating frogs resulting in the destruction of tumor cells which contain viral inclusions is discussed.

The fine structure of nuclear and cytoplasmic inclusions in primary renal tumors of mutant leopard frogs.
This investigation summarizes a study of the incidence and fine structure of primary renal tumors found in mutant leopard frogs (Rana pipiens burnsi). Of 204 winter frogs autopsied from Minnesota and South Dakota, renal tumors were found in 13 animals, an incidence of 6.4%. Light microscopic examination showed that all of the renal tumors had Cowdry Type A nuclear inclusions. The fine structure...
متن کاملInduction of Metastasis of Frog Carcinoma by Increase of Environmental Temperature
Metastasis of the kidney carcinoma of leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) has been induced by exposing tumor-bearing animals for approximately 50 days to a constant temperature of 28 degrees C. Under these conditions 54 per cent of the frogs developed secondary growths, whereas in groups kept at 18 degrees or at 7 degrees metastatic dissemination was found in only 6 per cent. Moreover, at the elevated...
متن کاملCarcinoma in the Leopard Frog: Its Probable Causation by a Virus
An epithelial tumor with acidophilic intranuclear inclusions frequently occurs in the kidneys of leopard frogs. This tumor usually has the appearance of an infiltrating and destructive adenocarcinoma, which, when large, not uncommonly metastasizes; less often it is more orderly and adenomatous. When inoculated as living fragments or cell suspensions into the lymph sacs, the cranial cavity, or t...
متن کاملRenal adenocarcinomas promoted by crowded conditions in laboratory frogs.
reported by the Raffertys (10) in leopard frogs (Rana pipiens pipiens) that were maintained under crowded con ditions in the laboratory for periods ranging from 3 to 10 months. These incidences (20†" 50 %) are significantly higher than the incidence that Lucké(5) found in newly caught frogs (2.7 %) or in frogs that he maintained in the laboratory for a year or more (6.7 %). Subsequent studie...
متن کاملCatalase Activity of Liver and Kidney in Frogs with Spontaneous Renal Carcinoma
The kidney carcinoma of the leopard frog has served for various studies on catalase activity, as a first step in gaining information on enzymatic properties of neoplasms in cold blooded animals. It was found that the activity level of this tumor is reduced to approximately 13 per cent of that of the normal frog's kidney. Systemic effects of the tumor on catalase activity of liver and kidney are...
